Nokia E71 Review 1 / 3 - Hardware

by Andi

For some time now - specifically since September 2008 - racing I now with the successor to the E61i, the E71 from Nokia through the area.

Display

Before buying, I was pretty torn on whether me, the display would not be too small. Finally, it does show the same resolution, but has a good bit less space. I can hold on, if you get used to after a few days to the new device, the smaller screen does not matter.

Keyboard

Similarly, the keyboard: Contrary to the E61i, the E71 is no more gaps between the keys. But in turn the pressure point is much better. It must be admitted, however, know that typing is harder than on the E61i. In addition, the layout has been slightly modified. The Symbian menu button was a Homekey and one moved to the left. But the key for the address book moved right next to the directional pad. I can not say that the new arrangement is better or worse. It represents but a Umgebwöhnung dar. irritating if, like us, both devices have the same time in action and even use each other's device.

Back to the D-pad: somewhere (I mean it was the review in allaboutsymbian.com I have read that Nokia delivered best-pad does the plug. The me only I can.
Sorry, had to give way to separate the Ctrl key and the key now shares with Alt. Between the two they replaced with "Num". However, does not work everywhere. Putty eg not noticed a change and lacks the function of a Control key.

Wlan

Furthermore, I noticed that the WiFi can also use weaker networks / place. This shows the E71 in the same situations and perform better in terms of speed of the WLAN.
notes giving power must be the E71, in any case, it often acts ehrheblich faster than its predecessor.

A-GPS

Previously available only in a few consumer phones from Nokia, the E71 has now finally an internal GPS receiver. At the same time it is in this so-called an A (ssisted)-GPS. Means nothing else than that the mobile phone at a location on the Internet depends on the used cell towers to retrieve information, and so narrow down the location. It works damn well.
Regardless of the navigation software, you should make sure that the so-called AGPS is enabled (System -> Preferences -> Trend general -> Positioning -..> Best Methods Supported GPS and Positioning server "supl.nokia.com) . As mentioned you need in a mobile Internet access, but you know then some with less than 5 seconds where you are. Without the support can also schonmal need more than a minute.

Camera

Unfortunately, the improvement is not even on the camera. This has indeed now a flash, but in sum, the images are still only need to use it. Whatever the reason, installed in the Nokia Business Series no clever lenses (eg Carl-Zeiss in 5800). The high resolution of the screws will help improve the image quality is known simply nothing if not look right.
The flash is not really to use. But he should cause to be illuminated for use in dark images, in this case are simple images with fanciful colors out. One can not call that even if all as art, but determined to be a simplification of reality. A few pictures I have already made with the camera and can be found in the images.

In part 2 of my Nokia E71 experience report is about the software-Part :)
