So far
With the move into our apartment I had decided to make the move and switch the television to digital. Too bad This was my experience with the analog TV, which also down 2010 (or 2012) should be turned off completely.
A file server, the Samba / Windows shares and NFS services for the Linux client has provided, I had always been a long time to run and which was therefore closer than the file server chainplate with DVB cards and similar, NEN digital video recorders have. For this there are those originally from Klaus Schmidinger (and largely improved, and now in a separate c't-occurring variant) created VDR - Video Disk Recorder.
There is a forum filled with very competent people and a wiki , which collects the experiences. And so it did not last long and I had a Technotrend C-2300 (known as full-featured ) and KNC-One (known as budget )-C DVB card and the receipt was from a few problems that the scales for the acquire the second map indicated immediately given.
This was then a self-made LIRC infrared receiver (thanks to Safti!).
Thus, the VDR was standing in a multimedia package with an Athlon 500, 192 MB Ram, and two plates under a makeshift TV table (actually a typical living room coffee table).
lower due to lack of power, outgoing disk space and the desire of the energy demand was already longer planned to "renovate" VDR to complete. This I have now done in the last 2 weeks the most part.
Inspiration
Parallel to upgrade then I came to a Spiegel Online article about the tinkering with Ikea furniture on two sides with the hide of a digital media hub (that is, a central repository for all kinds of digital data) in a Ikea get busy.
On the one Barbex 'Mythtv box , the flat screen in the lid of the haul has placed even NEN. Interesting idea, but since the TV must be found to get the place and I did not have a "surplus" TFT more, was not realized.
On the other Daniel . From both, I never imagined the reaction of the DVD slot copied.
Get fit with us also to the living room, secures the VDR against the cats and looks even better than the previous structure.
Craftsmanship
The box, built up fresh.
Since the TV should be on the set that I needed a connection, thus having to move without running the TV possible to access the hardware. The multimedia case I wanted to use in order to get the hardware and especially fix the DVB cards properly can.
Compared to the top you can see beautiful that the entire front panel can be removed.
The case is about as long as the court and accordingly had to get inside the housing into an angle, there was a reason for get so that the cats in the future should have no more chance to maltreat the cables. For parallel obstruct the case, I would get back but have to miss another opening, so that all slot or way would be found. The Cats Protection would have been there.
Instead of a large opening, a minimally enlarged.
The DVD drive is fixed on an angle to the rear and a former 3.5-5.25-inch hard drive frame to the side. It can be removed with a rotary wing clip a lock, so that the drive can be removed. If necessary. I have to put the back corner yet, as the currently installed burner inserted normally in the desktop computer and was just a test, but I did not until I "fix and put the TV on it had
Accessible is the DVD via a narrow slit:
First, the IR receiver was right, because he was open to the DVD but in the way and when / close the front, he also disturbed
Now the receiver is sitting next to, thanks to a long cable, which is beautifully laid inside
In addition, hats in the foot a HDD Led. At the bottom of the foot or so since the flashing LED in television is not to interfere. There was even room for the keyboard is connected to the case of a network failure.
Hardware
In Vdr now put the following hardware:
Motherboard: Asus M2NPV-VM (Gb LAN, DVI, S-Video Out, and more onboard.)
CPU: AMD X2 BE-2300 (Dual-Core with a maximum power of 45W)
RAM: 1 GB DDR2
DVB-C: 1 x Full-Featured Technotrend C-2300, 1 KNC One
Hard Drives: Samsung PATA / IDE HD400LD 400 GB system drive, Seagate PATA / IDE ST3200822A 200 GB Samsung S-ATA 500 GB
Whether the main reason is the power consumption has improved, I've been tested yet for lack of opportunity.
Software
Ubuntu Dapper Drake with 2.6.15 kernel
VDR 1.3.37
Lirc
Samba
Nfs
Apache
MySQL
Encryption of disks with Cryptsetup and Luks
I'm with the VDR in Hol now very happy. The only thing missing now is a flat screen
Oh, and the network cable is 30 meters ne role, of which more than half is located in the VDR. To something I had to use the space behind the case so ![]()

Hi,
why do you use for such an old VDR version? Finally, the current stable version is already at 1.4.7.
Greetings,
Martin
Well, that looks good! With you the DVD drive has also fitted in the top row, I wanted to do with my so, until I noticed that then came to my flat screen on the other hand (after I had already cut and drilled all ...). Have you done well to reach the eject button, or do you only do that via software? The button has proven to me as a certain "error in the system", namely it is not safe for children!
One more question, you have a link for the LIRC receiver? Likely, namely with me soon to a hardware modification, which would require the.
On the issue of power consumption, my box runs 120W in normal operation, your hardware is more powerful than mine, but new and therefore perhaps better developed TD. Would be interested to know what draws your Box Sun
(Sorry that I am here vollsabbel your blog ...)
Good luck with your VDR!
@ Martina: 1.3.37, because the latest is Ubuntu Dapper. I've looked through the changelog to 1.4.7 and found nothing, what would be really important. Or have you an example of what you'll see significantly better?
@ Barbex: Thanks for the praise and thanks for the suggestion regarding the general Hol

That had you up and verbort versägt, I had read. Can imagine how annoying that is
The button for the DVD is currently behind wood. I've also not had any ideas because we as good as the DVD do not need and when, then fold the front is currently forward
My LIRC receiver was this link crafted accordingly. The software is also explained.
I meld time I've measured how much eats the VDR. Presumably. this will also change yet, if I use the other kernel NEN Cool'n'Quiet used correctly, so that the processor runs more economical.
Let's see
Good luck with your MythTV box!
I drilled with me for the DVD button a hole and then a small piece of a wooden rod sawed off that a slightly smaller diameter than the hole. Then something filed and sanded so that the knob to caress the beautiful comes along.
The play then I just stuck with super glue on the plastic button. For the item "extra care" is looking to the same type of wood and ensures that the grain runs after being stuck in the same direction. But you can overdo it.
Jupp can
Nevertheless, it looks really nice with you. For me only the problem that the front still "slip over it" must. Furthermore, as already mentioned, the drive is not yet final, that is now to drill a hole or even remove the part completely makes no sense. I just have to see how I get the wood under the disc tray as flat as there is currently not the drive without the aid comes out, it is stuck
the link was helpful for you regarding the lirc?
